Rolex has partnered with Wallpaper*, the renowned architecture and interior design magazine, to release the first-ever authorised history of its iconic Oyster Perpetual Submariner watch. This 252-page coffee table book, titled Oyster Perpetual Submariner: The Watch That Unlocked the Deep, delves into the rich legacy of one of the most celebrated dive watches ever made. Written by Nicholas Foulkes, a leading authority on watchmaking and author of several in-depth works on Rolex, the book offers a meticulously researched account of the Submariner's evolution. Foulkes, known for his extensive exploration of watches, including Time Tamed, which chronicles the evolution of timekeeping over 3,500 years, brings a wealth of expertise to the project. Set for release in both English and French on September 16, the book marks the beginning of a new series of official Rolex publications, aimed at exploring the history of the brand's most iconic models. Through this work, readers will gain insight into the Submariner's journey from its groundbreaking debut in 1953 as the first divers' watch waterproof to 100 meters (330 feet) to its place today as a symbol of precision and exploration. Foulkes describes the experience of working with Rolex replica as a unique opportunity, saying, "Rolex is more than just a watchmaker; it's a global institution. As a historian with a passion for watches, I was honored to be granted special access to the Rolex archives. I'm grateful for the trust they placed in me to tell the story of a watch that has shaped both the watchmaking world and the history of underwater exploration." The book also tracks the development of Rolex's dive watches, including the Sea-Dweller (1967), the replica Rolex Deepsea (2008), and the 2022 Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge, capable of withstanding depths of 11 kilometers underwater. "The Submariner is the archetype of the diver's watch, embodying Rolex's deep connection to underwater exploration," says Arnaud Boetsch, Rolex's Director of Communication & Image. "What began as a tool for divers has become a symbol of adventure, worn by athletes, explorers, and enthusiasts alike." With a combination of Foulkes' expert insight, newly commissioned photography, and historical images sourced from clone Rolex's archives, Oyster Perpetual Submariner offers a detailed and visually striking narrative. Bill Prince, Editor-in-Chief of Wallpaper*, adds, "Meticulously researched and beautifully presented, this book is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the creation of a true masterpiece in timekeeping." The hardcover edition of Oyster Perpetual Submariner: The Watch That Unlocked the Deep will be available for general sale on October 1, 2024. A limited number of silk-bound copies will be available exclusively for pre-order from September 16 to 19 and for purchase beginning September 20, priced at £100 / €125 through WallpaperSTORE*.
